The MGM Targets 22 Rimfire Whirly-Gig® is a scaled-down version of the target we understand Terry Ashton invented. Terry’s version was called the Texas Star. We created an asymmetrical base to the plate to help ensure the targets release consistently when hit. We added a single steel spring to hold it until it’s shot. To set up for the next shooter, all you have to do is slide the target under the spring. When you’ve got it in place, it will easily fall into the “keyhole” that holds it.
When one of the 3/16” AR400 HexPlates are hit, it creates an out of balance condition that causes the target holder assembly to spin. The direction of spin can change depending on where the next hit target comes from. Creative planning can increase the challenge. One idea is to put a no-shoot target low and centered to guarantee the first hit will create an unbalanced condition. Here’s a video of a 22 Rimfire Whirly-Gig® target being shot with a .22 caliber long rifle, pretty darn well!!
If you’ve got this one mastered and want to try the centerfire version, you can find it here.
MGM .22 Rimfire Whirly-Gig® in action at OBRAMS (Old Bridge Rimfire Action Match Shooters) July Rifle Match. Shooters from neighboring states come to the New Jersey range obrams.org where rimfire only pistol and muilti-gun matches have caught on big time. Thanks Iggy for the video.
We have a video to give you an idea of how much fun this target can be:

Disclaimer – I work for MGM and own a Rimfire Whirly-Gig. The Whirly-Gig is fun to shoot as well as (I believe) a practical training target. It helps with acquiring moving targets, target acquisition speed and target discrimination when you obscure part of the Whirly-Gig with a no-shoot.
