I've got no clue what a Whirly-Gig® was in the "old" days, but I know what it is today. THIS is a Whirly-Gig®, as far as MGM is concerned. I'm fairly sure Terry Ashton in Texas invented this, and I want to make sure everybody knows that. I don't know if he dreamt it up himself, or brainstormed it with somebody, but it is one of the most incredibly innovative and FUN targets we've ever come across!

There are a few things we had to do differently because Idaho doesn't have easy access to some of the Texas oilfield materials that Terry uses, but we think it came out OK. I think you'll like it too.

As you can see from the photo, we took a completely different approach to the structure. With the laser cutter and 3/8" 500 Brinell steel for nearly all the "shootable" components, we were also able to simplify the target holding system. To solve the problem of consistently releasing the target when hit we created an asymetrical base to the plate and we added a single steel spring to hold it until it's shot. To set up for the next shooter, all you have to do is slide the target under the spring and it will easily fall into the "keyhole" that holds it.

MGM HexPlate™: MGM's exclusive HexPlate™ hexagonal shaped targets are made of premium MGM AR500 steel. The hexagonal shape offers up to 13% more target area than the same size round plate, and everyone will see the immediately recognizable MGM hex logo shape and know it as a genuine MGM Targets product, synonymous with quality, reliability and value.... Leave Nothing To Chance™.

Please note, early iterations of some MGM hexagonal shape targets were made measuring ‘tip to tip’ measurements. Since that time, all MGM HexPlate™ targets have been standardized with the hexagonal shape measured by ‘flat to flat’ dimensions which correlate to a 13% larger area than the same diameter round plate. The ‘flat to flat’ standard has also been adopted and approved by the USPSA. We apologize for any inconvenience. - 17 August 2016

This target is also available in a .22 Rimfire Version.  Please see our .22 Rimfire Targets section of our website for more information.

My agency bought some of these target systems for our annual SWAT Team competition. I ordered an extra Whirly-Gig because I wanted to be able to replace a target system if one broke. We did not need the extra Whirly-Gig because the other two worked flawlessly. I highly recommend this target system to any level of shooter. This system will help teach the shooter how to make accurate shots on moving targets.

i have six of these whirly gigs. At my matches you have to start at the bottom most paddle and clear the paddles as fast as you can. outside of the legs wearing out from 1000s of rounds of hitting the paddles theses targets are still going strong, a little cleaning of attachment points, a little grease on the spindle and these targets will go for a long long time. Years of use and not even one has worn out. I can not say enough about the quality of targets.
